The Mission Continues
Eric Greitens
Fellowship Awarded 2009

The Mission Continues is not a charity, it's a challenge. We recognize the incredible potential in our wounded and disabled veterans. They are an asset here at home, and they posses the leadership skills and passion to strengthen our communities. The Mission Continues Fellowship places wounded and disabled veterans in service-leadership roles across the nation. By challenging veterans to continue to serve their country, we have created a way to continue their mission of service as civilians.

Through our veterans tribute projects we empower citizens to do service work in honor of the lives of fallen service members. By engaging Americans in service work, we are able to carry forward the mission of veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Eric Greitens is the Co-founder and CEO of The Mission Continues. As a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, Eric served as a humanitarian volunteer around the world. His work with war-affected populations in Rwanda, Bosnia, Cambodia, and other countries, taught him the incredible power that people have to create hope through courageous service.

Eric is also a United States Navy SEAL officer, and he has deployed four times during the Global War on Terrorism: to Iraq, Afghanistan, the Horn of Africa, and Southeast Asia. He has served as the Commander of a Joint Special Operations Task Unit, Commander of a Mark V Special Operations Craft Detachment, and as Commander of an Al Qaeda Targeting Cell. His personal military awards include the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Purple Heart, and the Bronze Star.

When Eric returned from Iraq, he went to Bethesda Naval Hospital to visit recovering Marines there. When Eric asked them what they wanted to do when they recovered, each Marine told Eric that, if they were unable to return to their unit, they wanted to continue to be of service. Eric left Bethesda inspired by these courageous young men and women, and used his combat pay from Iraq to found The Mission Continues.
