Global Citizen Year
Abigail Falik
Fellowship Awarded 2009

Global Citizen Year is building a movement of young Americans who engage in a transformative year of global service between high school and college. Global Citizen Year participants work in apprenticeships in Asia, Africa and Latin America and develop an ethic of service, the ability to communicate across languages and cultures, and a deep commitment to becoming agents for social change.

The long term vision for Global Citizen Year is a world in which a "global citizen year" becomes a common step for students from all backgrounds. Future generations of Americans will better understand their responsibilities as global citizens, and will act with conviction and conscience to create a more just, peaceful and sustainable world.

Abigail Falik, the founder and CEO of Global Citizen Year (GCY), has dedicated her professional life to creating new opportunities for young Americans to learn about the world beyond our borders. Through work as an educator in diverse communities across the US and throughout the developing world, Abigail developed a passion for using education to promote global social justice and poverty alleviation. Abigail worked at NetAid where she designed, launched and led the Global Citizen Corps, which is now a flagship initiative of Mercy Corps reaching hundreds of thousands of students each year with campaigns addressing global AIDS, hunger and poverty.

Abigail holds a B.A. and M.Ed. from Stanford University, and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
